BREAKING News

As an Orthodox Christian, I found the opening act of the Paris Olympics featuring a rendition parody of the Last Supper with drag queens deeply troubling and offensive. This act not only disrespects the sacred, sacramental nature of the Last Supper, but it also goes against the teachings and beliefs held by of the Orthodox Christian Church

First and foremost, the Last Supper is a pivotal event in Christian history that holds great significance for believers. It is the final meal that Jesus shared with his disciples before his crucifixion, where he instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist. The Last Supper is a symbol of unity, fellowship, and sacrifice, as Jesus broke bread and shared wine with his disciples, identifying these elements with his Body and Blood. By depicting this sacred event with drag queens, the opening act of the Olympics trivializes and distorts its true meaning.

The use of drag queens in the portrayal of the Last Supper is particularly problematic for Orthodox Christians, as drag queens typically perform in a flamboyant and exaggerated manner, often engaging in provocative and sexually suggestive behavior. Orthodox Christianity teaches that God created humanity in his image, and that gender is a gift from God to be embraced and celebrated. This portrayal not only disrespects the holiness of the event but also undermines and perverts the dignity of gender and sexuality as understood by Orthodox Christian beliefs.

Furthermore, including a parody of a sacred event in the opening act of the Olympics sends a message that is at odds with the values of inclusivity and diversity that the event seeks to promote. While it is important to celebrate and embrace diversity, it is equally important to respect the sacred traditions and beliefs of religious communities. This portrayal of the Last Supper reflects a lack of understanding and sensitivity towards the religious convictions of a billion and a half Christians around the world, especially Orthodox Christians, and represents a blatant and open attack on Christianity and the Christian Tradition.

It is deeply offensive and disrespectful. The Last Supper is a sacred event in Christian history that holds great significance for believers, and this portrayal undermines its true meaning and significance. It is my hope that future events and performances will show greater sensitivity and respect towards the religious convictions of all individuals, and that the sacred traditions and beliefs of Orthodox Christians and other religious communities will be honored.

May we strive to promote understanding, harmony, and mutual respect among all people, regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds. Let us remember the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, as he said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).

Enough is enough. We must emphasize that the Orthodox Christian faith, as well as all Trinitarian faiths should not be mocked or caricatured in such manner. Those responsible for the opening ceremony, as well as those who plan such events, should apologize and think twice when producing such offensive acts in the future. Instead, may we all always seek to build bridges of understanding and compassion, even in the midst of differences and disagreements.

But as we seek to do so, let the world know, we Orthodox Christians will no longer stand idly by, “mute as fish,” and say nothing in the face of such sacrilegious, blasphemous mockeries, for…
