Athens to boost road safety with cameras
BREAKING News
The government has unveiled a new plan to install 1,388 traffic cameras across Athens over the next 18 months.
The cameras will monitor speed limits, red light violations, seat belt use, mobile phone use and other traffic infractions.
The cameras will operate 24/7 and will be integrated into a digital system developed by the Ministry of Digital Governance, which will collect data and instantly issue digital citations for violations, helping streamline enforcement.
The project, which was presented on Thursday by government officials, aims to improve road safety and prevent traffic violations.
The cameras will be placed along major routes including Amalias Avenue, Kifissias Avenue and Syngrou Avenue, among others.
The initiative also involves enhancing law enforcement resources, such as adding more police officers and using drones for traffic management.
Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou explained that the cameras will work in tandem with an online portal where citizens can view and contest violations.
The system will also track vehicle inspections and insurance checks.
With a sharp rise in traffic violations this year, officials hope the new system will reduce accidents and improve traffic flow in the capital.
