Cyprus is on the verge of joining the US Visa Waiver Program, with just a few minor issues remaining to be addressed.
Cyprus’ work program with US authorities is nearly 90% complete. This program, which aims to enhance security cooperation between Cyprus and the US, has seen significant progress, including the completion of necessary legislation and the ratification of two key agreements on the exchange of information between the two governments.
The remaining hurdles are related to technical aspects, such as the Police Passenger Data Unit, the integration of Cyprus’ police system with the US Department of Homeland Security’s system, and ensuring regular security checks in passport and ID card printing areas. These tasks will be completed in the next few days, allowing Cyprus to finalize its preparations within a few weeks.
The final step involves an upcoming visit from State Department and Congress experts for assessments. Cyprus’ eligibility hinges on meeting the threshold of rejecting no more than 3% of visa applications annually. Currently, Cyprus has exceeded expectations with a refusal rate of just 2.16%.
