Desperate schools turn to retired teachers to fill gaps

Amid a severe shortage of teachers, the Education Ministry has called on retired educators to apply for available teaching positions.

In the latest nationwide recruitment effort for 170 positions, only 69 were filled, with certain regional units facing extreme shortages. For example, only three teachers were found for 65 vacancies in West Attica, and just five for 17 in East Attica.

This is the first time the ministry is seeking retirees to help fill the gaps, allowing those under the age of 67 to apply.

Local calls for teachers will also be issued, targeting areas with particularly high demand.

Teachers’ unions have highlighted that despite this effort, staffing shortages and lost teaching hours continue, with the hope that the ASEP recruitment lists will be opened more frequently to address the growing need.

Many new graduates have been unable to enter the official hiring process due to technical issues.
