Outgoing US Ambassador to Greece George Tsunis described his time in the post as “the honor of a lifetime,” highlighting the personal significance of serving in his ancestral homeland.
“As a Greek-American, returning to serve in the land where my parents were born has made this journey even more meaningful,” Tsunis wrote in a social media post. He praised Greece’s “philoxenia, wisdom, and enduring spirit,” noting their profound impact on him during his tenure.
Tsunis also commended Greek Minister of State Giorgos Gerapetritis, whom he called a friend, for his leadership and partnership. “This work wouldn’t have been possible without his leadership,” Tsunis added.
Maria Olson, deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Athens, will assume temporary leadership on January 20 to continue advancing the US-Greece relationship, Tsunis said.
“Every corner of Greece – its storied past to its bright future – has offered lessons in leadership and friendship I will carry forever,” Tsunis said.
