Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Donald Trump’s election has pushed Europe to move beyond rhetoric and take action, but stressed it would not be in opposition to the US.
“We must seek mutually beneficial solutions,” Mitsotakis said Tuesday at an event hosted by the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce in the southern Athenian suburb of Vouliagmeni, noting the strong relations between Greece and the US. “These ties will remain intact.”
During a fireside chat with Enrico Letta, former Italian prime minister and president of the Jacques Delors Institute, Mitsotakis also addressed European defense, calling on the EU to take greater responsibility. “As Europeans, we must do more to protect our continent,” he said.
On Greek-American relations, Mitsotakis emphasized the strength of the alliance, citing a five-year defense cooperation agreement and broader collaboration in technology, education and culture. “I don’t foresee changes, but we must adopt a unified European approach with the new US administration,” he said.
Mitsotakis agreed with Trump’s call for European nations to boost defense spending, adding, “We need more fiscal space and European funding for defense.” He highlighted the success of the EU’s Recovery Fund and indicated that defense spending will be a key topic at the EU leaders’ summit on February 3.
Addressing Trump’s stance on social issues, Mitsotakis rejected the “woke agenda” that has gained traction in the US and reiterated that stability, as seen in Greece’s current government, is essential.
He also ruled out forming a government with parties further right than his New Democracy party and emphasized the need for bold European initiatives.
