The Ministry of Digital Governance has announced the closure of Greece’s last remaining land registry office, located on the island of Rhodes, marking a historic milestone in the country’s transition to a unified National Cadastre system.
After three decades of efforts, property registration in Greece will now be managed exclusively through the nationwide network of cadastral offices.
This development signifies the end of the outdated system, which previously relied on 392 separate land registry offices.
Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou highlighted the importance of this transition, stating, “With the definitive closure of the land registry offices, we are taking a major step to simplify procedures for citizens, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance the security of real estate transactions.”
The closure, however, comes despite unresolved cases, including approximately 60,000 pending property registrations on Rhodes alone.
Nonetheless, the ministry aims to end the parallel operation of three systems – land registry offices, transitional cadastral offices, and permanent cadastral offices – by consolidating all adjustments and corrections under the fully operational cadastre.
To support this transition, the ministry has enacted legislative reforms over the past two years, broadening access to cadastral procedures for professionals beyond legal experts.
