Global News Through a Greek Lens
Greece, along with the rest of the world, is waiting for the new US Administration to start planning and implementing its foreign and security policies.
For its part, Athens is looking forward to continuing and further deepening its strategic alliance with Washington.
An added dimension to the special bilateral relationship that has stood the test of time and transcends leaders and parties in power, is the emotional and social bond created by the strong Greek-American community, even more so as the latter’s overwhelming majority has voted for Donald Trump.
One should also remember that during the first Trump Administration the US and Greece had a very close cooperation and established a strategic dialogue. What’s more, that development took place under two ideologically different Greek governments, the first under leftist Alexis Tsipras and the second under center-right Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Greece’s close cooperation with the other two pillars of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, Israel and Egypt, makes these three countries, along with the US, natural allies with similar if not identical aims in this volatile region.
It is through this prism that Greece will continue to perform its role as a reliable ally and a country that takes its membership of NATO seriously, as proven by the fact that it is one of the alliance’s members that spends the highest percentage of gross domestic product on defense.
Athens looks forward to the next four years as a period during which it will continue to harness traditional close personal and strategic ties with the US, and act as a dependable partner and a stabilizing force in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean.
