BREAKING News

A new parliament speaker will be elected Wednesday following the resignation of Konstantinos Tasoulas, who was nominated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the position of Greek president.

The ruling New Democracy party has nominated Athens MP Nikitas Kaklamanis to succeed Tasoulas. A formal handover ceremony will follow the election.

Opposition PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis has expressed support for Kaklamanis’ candidacy, according to reports, despite internal party debates on the matter. Some PASOK MPs emphasized their backing for the institution of the parliament speaker regardless of party lines.

Meanwhile, the New Left parliamentary group has announced it will unanimously abstain from supporting Kaklamanis by voting present in Wednesday’s election.

On Tuesday, Tasoulas bid farewell to parliamentary officials and donated the latest issue of the literary journal “Epilogos” to the parliament library.
