Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended a memorial service at the Holy Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens on Sunday, officiated by Archbishop Ieronymos, to honor the late Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durres, and All Albania, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 95.
The service was also attended by President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Speaker of Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis, leader of the main opposition Nikos Androulakis, Minister of Education and Religious Affairs Kyriakos Pierrakakis, MEP Fredi Beleri, and other high-ranking officials.
According to reports, Archbishop Anastasios’s body will lie in state at the cathedral until the early hours of Monday morning, after which it will be transported to Tirana. In Tirana, the body will again lie in state before the funeral service, which is scheduled for Thursday.
Albania has declared a five-day period of mourning to honor the 95-year-old hierarch, who served as the spiritual leader of the country’s Greek Orthodox community for over three decades.
