The President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), Bill Papastergiadis OAM, met with the new consul general of Greece in the city, Dimitra Georgantzoglou, who recently assumed her duties.
The meeting focused on the support and enhancement of Melbourne’s vibrant Greek community, by maintaining and strengthening the strong ties of the diaspora with Greece, as well as the role of the consulate general in ensuring prompt and quality services for Greeks living abroad.
“It is a great honor to take on my duties in Melbourne and to collaborate with such an active and passionate diaspora. Providing prompt and effective service to Greeks abroad is a primary priority, with the aim of facilitating their daily lives. Our collaboration with the Greek Community of Melbourne is crucial in achieving these goals,” Georgantzoglou said.
She stressed the importance of digitizing consular services, which has already started to simplify access to public services, making procedures more immediate and accessible.
“The GCM is an organization that strives to maintain and strengthen its bonds with Greece. We are proud of our collaboration with the consulate general and the support it offers to the diaspora. I am confident that, with Ms. Georgantzglou, we will develop even more initiatives that promote unity and prosperity for Greeks in Melbourne,” Papastergiadis said.
During the meeting, he briefed the consul general on the Community’s upcoming activities and events, such as the 2025 Antipodes Festival, which will take place on February 22-23, as well as the traditional celebrations of Greek Independence Day on March 25.
Both parties agreed to work closely together to jointly address any challenges that may arise for the diaspora and to strengthen the relationship of trust and collaboration between the Greek community and the Greek authorities.
