‘Washington helps Athens because it moved away from Moscow’

By Ansa,

Turkey has said that it will respond to the US decision to remove an embargo on the sale of arms to Cyprus by “doing everything necessary”. “We will respond to the US decision with concrete steps”, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was quoted as saying by Anadolu news agency, claiming that Washington’s decision was a “reward” given by the US to Greece for moving away from Russia.

The decision taken by the United States, according to Cavusoglu, destroyed a policy of checks and balances over the island, which was divided in 1974 following a Turkish military invasion. “The US are completely in favor of Greek Cypriots”, added the Turkish diplomacy chief, noting that “hiding behind the European Union will be completely useless for Athens”, historically tied to Nicosia.
