Last week President Lee Myung-bak of South Korea said he is reviewing the call for resumption published by North Korea’s state-run KNCA news agency a few days ago.  This dialogue will be a valuable step that could be taken to calm tension between the north and the south. It expresses for both parties a deep wish for resolving and settling the grave situation prevailing in Korea and opening the door for a new kind of relations, that of peace and prosperity between the north and the south. This step was considered from public opinion as both patriotism and a good beginning.

Though the south rejected the offer, they did make a counteroffer to first confer about the attack and the sinking of South Korean warship last year.  These offers eased tensions on both parties as number of events had reached the relations on the Korean Penisula to a dangerous and frosty level in 2010. Another reason for the tension in 2010 was the November shelling attack on Yeonpyeong Island, which had as a result the death of four Koreans and ultimately angered the South against the North.

Finally, the two sides resulted to hold working-level talks on January 27 and set up the ground for a meeting on February 1 to talk about economic ties.
