By Ahval

Ahval editor David Lepeska welcomes Ahmet Kuru, political science professor at San Diego State University, to AhvalPod to discuss the weaknesses of Turkey’s institutions, the disputed Istanbul election result, and how President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s rule might end.

“The presidency is a system designed to satisfy Erdoğan’s personal demands, there is no other logic behind it,” says Kuru, adding that the president and his party are unlikely to be defeated by elections alone. “They will only leave power after a total economic collapse, and with certain level of hostility from the opposition.”
