European Parliament adopts resolution condemning Trump’s concentration camps

Renew Europe MEP Sheila Ritchie has today welcomed the adoption of a resolution of the European Parliament on the situation at the USA-Mexican border.
The joint text calls for the relevant authorities in the US to guarantee immediately that all detainees have access to basic rights, such as water, food, health and shelter. MEPs urge US authorities to immediately find non-custodial alternatives for migrants and refugee children and adults, whilst calling on the Government to start reuniting separated families.

Speaking after the adoption of the resolution, Ms Ritchie said:

“It is a disgrace that children are being held in detention centres for long periods of time under appalling conditions. The US Government should end these cruel policies and begin to unite families once more.”

“The United States taught the world that Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness are unalienable rights. President Trump’s concentration camps fall far short of those lofty ideals.”

“I am delighted a majority of MEPs have supported this resolution. A strong Europe should speak out and stand up against human rights abuses across the world, regardless of where they occur.”
